General

The first three letters are addressed to "My dear Mr. Rowley," the last to "Dear Mr Rowley."

December 3, 1891 letter written from 15 Upper Montagu Street Montagu Square, W., London and mentions not wishing to offend their sensitive friend [that is, Ford Madox Brown], list of Brown's unsold works, and that Rowley probably would not be in town before Blind left for Egypt. 4 pages (1 piece), marked "81" in pencil.

June 6, 1893 letter written from 17 Christchurch Row, Hampstead, N.W., London, indicating that Blind hoped to meet Rowley before she left town in August and indicating that she was interested in visiting Chicago. She noted that she was supposed to write something for the Woman's Congress [possibly the Woman's Congress of Missions, which was meeting in Chicago in October 1893], but her head was full of Roman memories and the beauty of Mrs [Marie Spartalli?] Stillman there. She discussed the Women Writers' dinner and hosting it and that [Charles?] Santley sang one of her songs at the Goldsmith family's concert. 4 pages (1 piece), marked "82" in pencil.

Letter postmarked October 13, 1893 and written from 55 London Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent directed to "Charles Rowley, Esq., c/o Rt. hon. Arthur Acland, Scarborough. Please forward." Paper and envelope were in mourning, probably for Ford Madox Brown, who died October 6, 1893. Blind stated that Rowley's letter was a comfort and discussed Brown: "He was for nearly twenty years the human being with whom I had the closest fellowship..." and that she would try to carry out her work according to his spirit. "It is very hard." 3 pages and envelope (2 pieces), envelope marked "91" in pencil.

The last letter, dated June 20 and written from 10 Upper Gloucester Place, Dorset Square, London, thanks Rowley for his suggestion and indicates that other friends would take Blind to see Sarah [Bernhardt?] if she appeared in Joan of Arc. She suggests they go to another play instead. 1 page (1 piece), marked "80" in pencil.
