Map of Fleet Prison, [before 1677]

 File — Folder: 1
Call Number: MS R2

Scope and Contents

The legend on the map states that it is "the plott of the prison of the Fleete & the wardens houses therein & thereto adionyinge. Bold Boughey [?] Esq. warden of the Fleete holdes it for life by lease from Sir Jeremy Whichcott Barrt who hath the estate in Fee." Map is docketed "warden of the Fleetes Clayme...for the prison of the Fleete. Int." The map includes boundaries, points of access, simple floorplan of a small building, the "tenement" area on the other side of the "passage to Fleete Street." There is little internal detail, probably drawn for the legal definition of the area and probably represents the prison yard and the first building erected after the 1666 fire.

Dating is based on the fact that Whichcote was made warden in 1660, while still in exile. The prison was burned in the Great Fire of 1666 and Whichcote was given a license to rebuild. He died in 1677.
