Native American people, possibly from the Arapaho tribe, 1897
Dates
- Creation: 1897
Processing Information
The identity of the Native American tribes included in this collection is not clear. Only limited identification is provided by Culver. Often that information is inconsistent. For example, information in an inscription by Culver on the backing of an oversize photographic print (RH PH 75f, box 2, folder 1) suggests that some of the photographs may be images taken at the Topeka Fall Festival in 1897. The inscription identifies the tribes as visitors from Darlington, Oklahoma Territory, and members of the Arapaho Nation. This corresponds with information from some newspaper accounts from the time period, which stated that the Native Americans in attendance at the Topeka Fall Festival were Cheyenne and Arapaho (Topeka Daily Capital, Wednesday, September 29, 1897, page 6, and Topeka State Journal, Monday, September, 27, 1897, page 5).
However, the standard-size print duplicate of this oversize photograph in this subseries (box 6, folder B:1355) does not have the tribe identified, only names of the individuals. The names of the individuals between the two photographs varies slightly, which could be the result of either Culver mis-identifying, or the processor mis-reading Culver's handwriting, or a typo.
Another document (in box 6, folder B:1352), referring to the same image as above, identifies the same group of people in the photograph as those of the Modoc Nation.
Terms and language used is representative of when the images/texts were created and has been replicated in this finding aid only when directly quoting from captions and folder titles. Every effort has been made not to use derogatory language in this finding aid.
