Asiento-related records, circa 1713-1724, undated
Scope and Contents
Memorials and papers concerning the Asiento, the licensed and annual ships, the profits from those ships reserved for the King of Spain ("the Reservations"), and negotiations on buying ships for the King of Spain.
The "Asiento de Negros" was the monopolistic system used by the Spanish government from the early 16th to mid-18th centuries in which private individuals, companies, or other sovereign powers supplied enslaved persons to the Spanish colonies in the Americas. The British South Sea Company won this contract in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht, with the provisions that the Company would provide 4,800 enslaved persons to the Spanish American colonies annually and in return send one ship each year to engage in trade more generally.
