General correspondence, 1920 - 1939

 Sub-Series
Call Number: 2/9/1

Scope and Contents

This series of documents pertain to Lindley’s long and controversial chancellorship; most of the correspondence about Lindley’s firing by Governor Davis, however, is found in different series. Instead, this correspondence illuminates the other aspects of Lindley’s leadership. Lindley oversaw a massive building boom at KU, including the construction of the university’s first women’s dormitory, Corbin Hall, and the Kansas Memorial Union. Lindley also presided over new restrictions on the rights of African American students and increased segregation in the university, a controversial process which is reflected here; this series contains correspondence from alumni and students protesting Lindley’s segregationist policies.
