General
A deposition [?] beginning "In the year 1705 comes from the Canarys to London Arthur Fowler, a Merchant, with whom I had dealings…" Fowler came to know a London merchant, Thomas Boteler, who borrowed money from him, using as surety goods Boteler had given Fowler to ship to the Canarys. The boteler claimed he could not pay his creditors because Fowler would not give up Boteler's goods. So Boteler and I were arrested to force us to give them up (but I knew nothing about the matter). We appearing at Guild Hall the first day of the Sessions before Sir Owen Buckingham there was a great Clamour against us as Papists, and we were committed without hearing our testimony. I was let out in 2 days, however. In Aug 1710 a statute of bankruptcy was taken out against me and I was cleared of it on 18 October [details of estates sold, etc, money by marriage]. Boteler gave me a bond for £50 for my pains and went to Jamaica; the bond is still unpaid
