Writings, circa 1971-1994, many items undated

 Series
Call Number: RH MS 1580

Scope and Contents

Series includes proposals and submissions sent to publishers, incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence (including rejection letters), drafts (often with handwritten corrections and comments), notes for works, research and/or reference material, contracts and drafts of contracts, and final published copies of works, sometimes in photocopied form and sometimes just the piece pulled from the magazine or journal in which it appeared. There may be multiple drafts or copies of submissions in multiple folders across the series; Bezzi frequently submitted works to multiple magazines. No effort has been made to weed out possible duplicates.

Bezzi wrote in a variety of formats and genres, including short fiction, movie and play scripts, magazine articles and interviews, ghostwriting and collaborative projects, as well as novels and other longer works. The fiction includes pornography, which was sometimes published in gay men's magazines with graphic images and nudity. It appears Bezzi sometimes wrote under a pseudonym; some submissions were from "Tommy Lee Thomas."

Bezzi organized his works in rough chronological order; Spencer staff have maintained this order because it shows the progression of his work. Staff have moved folders if they were placed wildly out of chronological order, but strict chronology was not maintained by Bezzi or by Spencer staff. Folder titles are Bezzi's unless in [brackets], in which case Bezzi had provided no title, or staff have added clarification. Bezzi when handwriting frequently did not use capital letters; Spencer staff as standard practice have capitalized at least the first word in a folder title. He also did not use quotations or italics to denote titled works; staff have typically followed this practice because it is not always clear if folder titles are in fact titles of works as well. Bezzi frequently used a shorthand to describe his works; "ND" for example stands for "Notre Dame."

Staff separated some folders found with the Writings series into a personal papers series, as these materials did not appear directly related to Bezzi's work as a writer or editor. However, these materials may have been part of Bezzi's research and inspiration. Materials found in the correspondence series may relate to Bezzi's writings as well.
