Vanellus vanellus -- Northern Lapwing; vanneau huppé. Alternate name on piece: Vanellus cristatus [Lapwing, or peewit] Reference painting, very well finished; 5 nestlings in different poses: the four young in the published plate seem to be derived from these models; note on form; at foot of sheet: "the delicacy of the texture can be imitated better from the prepared skin on stone using a knife." Artist's name(s): Gould, John; Richter, Henry Constantine.
