Correspondence, 1946 - 2020
Scope and Contents
Most of the letters, cards, photographs, and newspaper clippings in the correspondence series were sent to Barbara Burghart throughout her life, but also include some correspondence sent by Burghart. There are a few letters belonging to her aunt, Grace Perry, presumably gathered when Burghart cleared out Perry's house after her death in 1990.
Topics covered in Burghart's letters include art, literature, clothing, housing, finances, landscaping, travel, health, and interpersonal relationships. Letters are organized somewhat chronologically and loosely based on the order of names listed in Burghart's included "Key to these letters from important people in my life."
The largest groups of letters come from a box that was labeled "Family Letters" and from folders labeled "Life with the Gorgones." Folder titles [in brackets] were created by Spencer staff based on their understanding of the contents while the rest are taken from envelopes labeled by Burghart herself.
