According to a letter of transmittal accompanying this journal, Ella Chase began the journal in Iowa and continued it during her family's move to Emporia, Kansas. The last entry in the journal is dated Wilson, Colfax County, Nebraska, January 1, 1884. Miscellany in the journal include brief accounting notes regarding the sale of butter and eggs, income from laundry service, occasional transcriptions of letters, and recipes.
