Scope and Contents

Published in The Gun and the gospel, early Kansas and Chaplain Fisher. Chicago, Kenwood Press, 1896. Three episodes, "Exciting Chase After a Fugitive Slave", "The Lawrence Massacre, August 21, 1863", and "Shot at in the Pulpit, but Missed", are narrated by Fisher, who was a participant in each of the incidents. The first episode relates Fisher's involvement in the efforts to rescue a fugitive slave, Charlie Fisher, who lived in Leavenworth, from slavecatchers. The second episode relates the author's recollections of Quantrill's raid. The third episode recalls an attempt on Fisher's life while preaching a sermon at Olathe, Kansas. Each of these episodes was included in Fisher's autobiography, The Gun and the Gospel (1896).
