These sixty-two letters, written from 1857 to 1873, are to John B. Kellogg and his wife Anna of Troy, New York. Letters to John Kellogg, a cashier with Troy's Central National Bank, relate chiefly to land investments in Kansas and Nebraska. Those to his wife Anna are from family and friends.

John B. Kellogg, born about 1834, and his wife Anna were born in New York State. From September 1, 1857 to June 17, 1871, John Kellogg was employed as a cashier at the Central National Bank in Troy (Rensselaer County), New York.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 62 letters written to John B. Kellogg and his wife Anna from 1857 to 1873. Letters to John Kellogg are contained in two folders; letters to Anna Kellogg in one folder. Letter arrangement is chronological within each folder.

The 43 letters to John B. Kellogg date from 1857 to 1870 and are business letters, chiefly from real estate brokers and attorneys regarding land warrants in Kansas and Nebraska. All of Kellogg's nineteen letters from Kansas, dated 1859-1869, are from real estate brokers Thaddeus H. Walker and George G. Walker, written from Leavenworth, Lecompton, and Burlingame. The 19 letters to Anna Kellogg, which date from 1865 to 1873, are personal letters from her family and friends. Of these, fourteen letters are from her sister Mary's husband, Thomas H. Doane, a traveling clothing merchant who writes from various midwest locations, including Missouri, Nebraska, and the Kansas communities of Troy and Baxter Springs. With Anna Kellogg's letters is her calling card.
