History of the Anti-Horse Thief Association
The Anti-Horse Thief Association (AHTA) was a citizens' vigilance body that emerged in the United States in the 1850s and remained active into the early 1900s. Its purpose was to prevent the theft of property, especially horses, from marauders, and to deter all forms of crime and lawlessness. The Association quickly grew, and soon had many state divisions and county units. Membership, which included AHTAhta protection, was open by application to law-abiding citizens who had reached the age twenty-one. Male members of county units (designated as subordinate orders) were eligible to attend meetings and to hold offices. One of the AHTA's many sub-orders was located in Hughes County, Oklahoma. Hughes County resident C. L. (Charles L.) Nugent was its president during meetings held from December 1911 to May 1912.
