Ella Dewey Woart letter to her grandmother
Overview
This six-page letter was written in the spring of 1874 from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas by Ella Dewey Woart, daughter of John Woart, post chaplain at the fort. Having arrived at Fort Leavenworth with her parents the previous fall, Ella writes to her grandmother, describing the appearance of the fort, her family's quarters, her father's work, and the inhabitants at the fort and in the nearby town of Leavenworth.

Biography of Ella Dewey Woart
Ella Dewey Woart was born about 1848 in New York State to John and Elizabeth Woart. Ella's father, a member of the clergy, served as a United States Army chaplain at various military posts before being ordered to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as post chaplain in the fall of 1873. He remained at Fort Leavenworth until the spring of 1882.
