Overview
This collection includes records from two Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas businesses: the Carey Salt Company and the Richards-Scheble Candy Company. Included are shipping orders and waybills for shipments from the candy company in 1919. There is also a signed carbon copy of a February 3, 1923 notice from Carey Salt Company president Emerson Carey, in his capacity as chair of the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee, and his son, Emerson Carey, Jr., announcing cash prizes to award-winning members of the Reno County Calf Club, on Carey Salt letterhead.

History of the Carey Salt Company
The Carey Salt Company of Hutchinson, Kansas was founded in 1900 by Emerson Carey, who was born January 22, 1863, in Grant County, Indiana to Samuel and Nancy Jane (Bundy) Carey. Emerson Carey's youngest son, Emerson, Jr., was born in 1906. From 1908 to 1916, Emerson Carey, Sr. was a member of the Kansas State Senate, and was instrumental in the establishment of the State Fair at Hutchinson. He also chaired the Agricultural Committee of the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce.
The Carey family sold the company operations--including the mine, evaporation plant, and small railroad--in 1969 to the Interpace Corporation. The operations changed hands several times over the next few decades until the Hutchinson Salt Company purchased the mine in the early 1990s, separating it from the evaporation plant.
History of The Richards-Scheble Candy Company
The Richards-Scheble Candy Company of Hutchinson was established in 1902 by co-owners Alfred Rubin Scheble, Jr. and D. Earl Richards. Scheble died in February 1934 from an accident at the factory. The candy company closed in the 1950s.
