Biography of William L. Hastie

William Lewis Hastie was born in Douglas County, Kansas on March 8, 1865 to George W. Hastie and Susanna L. (Eberhart) Hastie. His first wife was Mary Matilda Patterson. His second wife was Anna C. Smith, whom he married on December 20, 1909. Hastie died on November 12, 1941.

This photocopied typescript is Lawrence, Kansas resident William L. Hastie's 93-page account of an automobile trip which he and his wife Anna C. (Smith) Hastie took to California in the 1930s. Hastie's detailed day-by-day account begins with their September 1937 departure and ends with their February 1938 return to Lawrence. He describes their experiences traveling by way of Denver, Salt Lake City, Washington State, and Oregon enroute to California; their California experiences in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and at Pasadena's New Year's Day parade of 1938; and their return trip via New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Details of their visits with family members and acquaintances along the way are included. Prefacing Hastie's travel account is a one-page foreword, compiled by Anne E. Hemphill, which contains a brief family history of William Hastie.
