History of Lane University (Lecompton, Kansas), 1865-1902
Lane University was founded at Lecompton, Kansas in 1865 by the Reverend Solomon Weaver, who served as the school's first president. The school was named in honor of James H. Lane, United States Senator from Kansas, and was founded on the ruins of a structure which was begun in 1856 as the proposed capitol of Kansas Territory, but was left uncompleted. Throughout its history, the University was owned and operated by the United Brethren church. The Reverend Charles M. Brooke was elected president of the University in 1891. The building which housed Lane University was later named to the National Register of Historic Places, and became a historical museum.
