Biography of William E. Stafford
William Edgar Stafford was born in 1914 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He received B. A. and M. A. degrees from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. During World War Ii, he served for four years in a camp for conscientious objectors, and afterward was employed in San Francisco as educational secretary for Church World Service, a relief organization. In 1948, he became an English instructor at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon. Stafford's poems have been published in many magazines and anthologies. His published collections of poems included West of the City (1960) and Traveling Through the Dark (1962), which won the 1963 National Book Award. Stafford died in 1993.
