Biography of Murt Hanks, Jr.

Murt Hanks, Jr was born 26 August 1933 in Manhattan, Kansas to Murt and Monett Hanks. He attended Manhattan Public Schools and went on to attend Kansas State University. He worked for twelve years at a locally owned exterminating company and, in 1969, was elected to the Manhattan City Commission. Three years later, in 1972, Hanks became the city's first African American mayor. That same year the U.S. Army employed Hanks as the first Equal Employment Officer at Fort Riley.

Hanks was also highly active in community activities, including being a Scoutmaster, serving as a member of the Kansas Civil Rights Commission, the Manhattan YMCA Planning Board, the Riley County Mental Health Board, The Commission on Social Concern of the First Methodist Church, and the Kansas League of Municipalities. He also acted President of Manhattan's Human Relations Board and was a voting delegate at the Annual Congress of Cities.

Murt Hanks, Jr married Barbara Starnes; the couple had two sons and two daughters.
