History of Hixon Lumber Company (Atchison, Kan.)
The Hixon Lumber Company was founded in 1867 at 913 Main in Atchison, Kansas by G. C. Hixon as a distribution yard for his sawmill at Hannibal, Missouri. Logs sawed at Hannibal were floated down the Mississippi River to St. Louis, sawed into lumber there, and then shipped to Atchison. From Atchison the lumber was transported overland by wagon train to various points in the West. Thus, G. C. Hixon and the Hixon Lumber Company played important roles in the development of the frontier. G. W. Pennell (grandfather of owners Robert and Pen Snowden) was a nephew of G. C. Hixon and was sent to Atchison in 1870 as manager of the company. Two years later, he bought the company.
T. E. Snowden, son-in-law of G. W. Pennell, bought the Hixon Lumber Company in 1922 and expanded its activity to include lumber yards at Lancaster, Huron, Grant City, Sheridan, Rockport, Maitland and Skidmore. The Snowden family owned the company until 1968 when it was sold. Over the years the Hixon Lumber Company became the city's largest supplier of building materials, which included a Red-E-Mixed Concrete Company and a full-line hardware store.
