Overview

Letter written October 26, 1866 by Leavenworth, Kansas businessman H. D. Mackay, denouncing the administration of U. S. President Andrew Johnson in the nation's period of post-Civil War Reconstruction. The envelope is addressed to L. E. Campbell but postmarked September 28. Mackay's letter is to Lieutenant Lafayette Campbell, who later married a niece of Johnson's successor, Ulysses S. Grant.

Biography of H. D. Mackay

H. D. Mackay was a prominent Leavenworth, Kansas businessman in the 1860s and 1870s who, in partnership with Theodore C. Sears, operated the Law and Collection Office of Mackay and Sears. In 1875, Mackay served in the Kansas House of Representatives, representing the state's 19th District.

Scope and Contents

This handwritten letter from H. D. Mackay, dated October 26, 1866, is addressed to Lieutenant Lafayette E. Campbell, written in response to Campbell’s letter of October 14. The envelope is addressed to L. E. Campbell but postmarked September 28. Writing in the nation’s period of post-Civil War Reconstruction, Mackay denounces the administration of U. S. President Andrew Johnson and comments briefly on the status of Kansas campaigns for election to the Congress. Of note are the later political affiliations of Mackay’s correspondent, Lafayette Campbell, who in 1875 married Margaret Dent, daughter of Frederick Tracy Dent, military secretary and brother-in-law to Johnson’s successor, Ulysses S. Grant.
