Mattie Howard journal and autobiography
Overview
These two documents by ex-convict and evangelist Mattie Howard, include her published autobiography, The Pathway of Mattie Howard (c1937), and a 1921 journal in which she asserted her innocence of crimes in Kansas City, Missouri for which she served seven years in the Missouri State Prison before entering a career in evangelism. Inscribed in her journal are the names of J. P. Mullane, a Kansas City criminal attorney, and L. C. Talbott, who served as Miss Howard's bondsman.

Biography of Mattie Howard
Martha Alice "Mattie" Howard was born in 1894 at Preston, Idaho to Charles and Martha (Keenan) Howard. When she was eight months old, her family moved to Denver, Colorado. In her twenties, she relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where she was tried and convicted in 1921 on charges related to the robbery and murder of a Kansas City jeweler. Following seven years of imprisonment in the Missouri State Prison, she returned to Denver, where she later became an evangelist.
