Overview

The Douglass State Bank was established in 1947 by Henry W. Sewing and other African American and minority businessmen interested in promoting the financial health of minority communities in Kansas City, Kansas. The collection contains historical and commemorative documents produced by the Bank, as well as related articles and correspondence. Photographs of the Bank's facility development, personnel and founders, and sponsored events make up a large portion of the collection.

History of Douglass State Bank

The Douglass State Bank was established in 1947 to service African American and minority communities in the Kansas City, Kansas, metropolitan area. The Bank, built upon the framework established by H.W. Sewing's Sentinel Loan Company, was located on E. 5th St. in Kansas City, Kansas, through the 1970s. The bank was renovated first in the 1950s, expanded in 1961, and served the community until it closed in 1983.

Scope and Contents

The collection is arranged in two series: Records and Photographs. The Records series includes historical and commemorative documents produced by the Bank, as well as related articles and correspondence. Photographs make up the bulk of the collection and serve as a pictorial history of the bank, arranged roughly chronologically, depicting the founding, construction, and remodeling of the Bank, followed by the 25th Anniversary celebration (1972), and various individuals (including founders, officers, and their families). Sewing family photographs are found at the end of the series. Commemorative photographic scrapbooks and oversize photos are shelved separately. Throughout the finding aid, Douglas State Bank is abbreviated as DSB.
