Papers of John G. Stutz
Overview
This collection reflects John G. Stutz's work with the Kansas Emergency Relief Committee during the Great Depression, as well as his involvement with the League of Kansas Municipalities, National League of Cities, and the International City Management Association. The collection also includes a variety of material from Stutz's personal life and his interest in genealogy.

Biography of John G. Stutz
Stutz was born in a sod house in Ness County, Kansas on January 1st, 1893 to Valentine C. and Susan (Oetzel) Stutz. He attended the University of Kansas between 1916-1919. Before finishing college, Stutz enrolled in officer training school in Leavenworth, Kansas and served as an Infantry One Pounder Gun Divison Instrucutor. He resigned his commission as 1st Lieutenant to finish college at the University of Chicago.
Stutz served as executive director of the League of Kansas Municipalities (1920-1955), International City Managers Association (1922-1929), American Municipal Association (1924-1931), and both the Kansas Emergency Relief Committee and Kansas State Department of Social Welfare (1933-1937). The Kanseas Emergency Relief Committee was created in 1932 to assist in transacting business between state and federal government relief work during the Great Depression, lasting only until 1937 when its functions were transferred to the Kansas State Department of Social Welfare.
Stutz married Gertrude Edith Griffin of Kansas City, Missouri on September 1, 1921 and had two children, Alan Griffin Stutz and Richard G. Stutz. John G. Stutz died on March 30, 1994 at the age of 101.

Materials located at RH MS 327 contain documents from various ogranizations in which Stutz was professionally involved, including the Kansas Emergency Relief Committee (KERC), League of Kansas Municipalities (LKM), National League of Cities (NLC), International City Management Association (ICMA) and the American Municipal Association (AMA).
Materials at RH MS 749 contain personal papers, photographs, genealogies, journals, books, reports, correspondence, as well as some additional documents from Stutz's career and education.
Oversize materials are located at RH MS Q182, which contains photographs, certificates, awards, and census records. RH MS R305 contains a panoramic photo of the 13th Annual Convention of the League of Kansas Municipalities, as well as negatives for a family genealogy publication. RH MS S55 has a poster.
