History of the Lawrence, Kansas City Clerk's Office
The city of Lawrence was established in the Kansas Territory in 1854, soon after the territory opened for Euro-American settlement. It was founded by abolitionists associated with the New England Emigrant Aid Company who wished to ensure the territory entered the United States as a free state. The City Clerk's office was created soon after the city was founded.
The purpose of the city clerk's office is to manage official municipal records, including agendas and minutes for the city commission and all ordinances and resolutions, and to serve as the freedom of information officer for the city. The office also issues certain permits and licenses for businesses operating in Lawrence, including for sidewalk sales, hosting street events, and temporary permits to have liquor on-site. The City Clerk's Office is currently part of the City Manager's Office.
