Personal papers of Raymond A. Goetz
Overview
This collection includes legal documents on baseball cases and the United Auto Workers and Ford arbitration decisions. It also consists of several volumes entitled Baseball Arbitration Panel Discussions, 1979-1985. Goetz's personal papers contain scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and files of legal evidence documenting some of his well-known Major League Baseball cases.

Biography of Raymond A. Goetz
Raymond A. Goetz was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1922. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an aviator. Goetz received his juris doctorate in 1950 and his M.B.A. in 1963, both from the University of Chicago.
After serving as a partner in a private law firm in Chicago, Goetz joined the faculty at the University of Kansas in 1966. He reached full Professor status in 1969, teaching contracts and labor law.
Goetz was an arbitrator in many well-known Major League baseball legal cases involving salary compensation. He was also baseball's sixth permanent arbitrator regarding grievance issues, and his decisions were widely cited. Goetz chaired the Baseball Arbitration Panel from 1979-1985 and was a permanent umpire for Ford Motor Company and United Auto Workers.
Raymond A. Goetz retired from KU in 1987 and died May 2, 2000.

Scope and Contents
This collection consists of several volumes of legal rulings regarding the Baseball Arbitration Panel and the UAW-Ford Umpire decisions. Legal documents regarding two specific cases of salary compensation of Major League Baseball players Orel Hershiser and Doug Drabek are also included. The collection also contains scrapbooks with newspaper clippings documenting the arbitration baseball cases with which Goetz was involved.
