History of the Albert T. Reid Cartoon Collection
The Albert T. Reid Cartoon Collection was begun in the 1930s when Kansas-born cartoonist Reid presented to the University of Kansas a small number of items that formed the nucleus of the collection. Considerable effort was undertaken in 1954 to expand the collection by the William Allen White Foundation, to be housed in the School of Journalism's Historical Center at the University. These efforts to expand were made through solicitations to editorial and comic strip cartoonists all over the United States for examples of their work. As a result of this, nearly 600 cartoonists contributed approximately 1750 items between the years 1954 and 1956. In the late 1960s, the School transferred to the collection to the newly-opened Kenneth Spencer Research Library.
