Biography of James W. Green (1842-1919)
James Wood Green received his A.B. in 1866 and his A.M. in 1886, both from Williams College in Massachusetts. He moved to Olathe, Kansas in 1870 to join a local judge's law office. In 1877 he moved to Lawrence, KS and the following year was elected county attorney.
Green joined the faculty of the University of Kansas as the Professor in Charge of the Law Department in 1878. In 1891 he became a Professor of Law and the Dean of the Law School. He died in 1919 after 40 years in charge of the law school at KU.
The first Law School building on KU's campus was named Green Hall in Green's honor in 1905. When the Law School moved to a new location in 1979, the new building retained his name and the old Law School building was renamed Lippincott Hall after KU's fourth chancellor, Joshua Lippincott.
