History of the Church Women United of Lawrence, Kansas
The Church Women United of Lawrence, Kansas is a group of Christian women formed to strengthen ties with each other and their churches to celebrate World Day of Prayer, Map Fellowship Day and World Community Day, and contribute to action for peace and social justice. The national group was founded in 1941 as an interdenominational group and is recognized as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations.
The Lawrence group has promoted fair housing, increased funding for public schools and social services, abolishment of the death penalty, and other social justice issues to officials and legislators, as well as provided food and supplies to local food pantries. The group helped found the Emergency Services Council in 1972.
