History of the Friends of the Kaw
The Friends of the Kaw is a grassroots, statewide, private, non-profit river conservation group concerned with educating Kansans about the importance of preserving and rehabilitating rivers. The group is focused on the Kansas, or Kaw, River, the largest prairie watershed in the world, with a mission to advocate for the rehabilitation of the river and its environs, promote compatible public recreational use of the river, and otherwise protect the watershed.
The group was initially formed in 1991, at a time when the Kansas River was mostly inaccessible to the public, and has focused its efforts on changing that inaccessibility. A core focus for the group has been limiting the amount of sand dredging, or removing sediment from the streambed for such uses as concrete and asphalt production, allowed along the Kaw.
