Biography of Ernst L. Gayden, Sr.

Ernst Linton Gayden was born 14 May 1902 in Kansas City, Kansas to Ernst and Ida Mae (Patterson) Gayden. Gayden graduated from Sumner High School and attended the University of Kansas, Washburn University, and Pittsburg State University. After teaching auto mechanics at Sumner High and the Kansas Vocational School in Topeka, Kan. and serving as principal of the R.T. Coles Veterans Training School (Missouri), Gayden owned and was president of Ernst Gayden Travel Agency. He retired from the Agency in 1987.

An active member in the community, Gayden belonged to a number of groups including the Kansas State Historical Society, the Quindaro Town Preservation Society, and the St. Luke's Auxiliary. He served on the board of the Wyandotte Co. chapter of the American Heart Association, founded an alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and was founder and past president of the John Brown Memorial Statue Association.

Gayden married Cecelia Kealing, who preceded him in death. He then married Irma Borders. He had four children, Donald Kealing, Ernst Jr, Marie Toi-San and Betty, and two stepchildren, John Estes Jr. and Betty. Ernst L. Gayden, Sr. died 29 December 1991; Irma Gayden died 1 February 1998.
