Biography of J. Haviland Haight, b. 1828.
J. Haviland Haight was born on February 12, 1828 to Charles and Elizabeth Haight of Poughkeepsie, New York. In the 1870s, Haight purchased substantial tracts of real estate in the Kansas counties of Leavenworth, Douglas, and Wilson. In addition to his purchases of rural acreage, Haight acquired many lots within the city of Lawrence in Douglas County. He maintained his Poughkeepsie residency, but also resided in Lawrence at various times and retained title to his properties in and around Lawrence through the 1880s.

Scope and Contents
The J. Haviland Haight papers are comprised largely of correspondence, business records, and legal documents relating to Haight’s real estate investments in Leavenworth, Douglas, and Wilson counties. Haight's real estate papers include letters, mortgages, promissory notes, cancelled checks, property tax receipts, fire and tornado insurance policies, and deeds, including the 1860 deed for Haight's Poughkeepsie, New York residence. Names of Haight’s wife and parents appear on various deeds and mortgages. Several other legal documents relating to family members are included.
The collection’s letters consist of business letters, most written by real estate agents or attorneys on Haight’s behalf. Haight’s signature appears only on the collection’s legal documents. Folder arrangement is largely by type of document (deeds, property tax receipts, etc.). Subarrangement within folders is chronological.
