Overview

Margarette S. Miller, of Portsmouth, Virginia, compiled five scrapbooks documenting her research on the alleged authors of the Pledge of Allegiance (James B. Upham and Francis Bellamy). A member of the women's service organization Job's Daughters International, her interest in the topic stemmed from a conference she attended in 1936.

This collection includes 5 scrapbooks totalling 650 pages of correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, affidavits, and photographs related to Margarette Miller's research. Correspondence includes letters, postcards, and telegrams from Mrs. Henry Upham (Geneva Ash Upham), William G. Upham, David Bellamy, J.B. Bellamy, Charles Tansill, Eleanor Austin, C. Douglas Cushman, Mrs. Sol Miller, George Lober, W.J.H. Butler, Arlene C. La Rue, Arthur D. Healey, Richard G. Hensley, Stephen Early, Helen M. McFarland, Jas. A. Moss, Marshall J. England, E.D. Bevitt, Nan Martin, Marion Seeyle. Clippings included in the collection are from The Elks Magazine, The Rome Sentinel, Time and Life, and The Youth's Companion. Miller corresponded with a variety of organizations. Those included in this collection are Free Masons of New York; J.B. Bellamy and Co.
