Overview

These papers of McPherson County, Kansas attorney and Kansas state senator Lloyd H. Ruppenthal consist of correspondence, reports, service records, and clippings which emanated from his political activities, military service, and professional service activities. The papers, which date from 1935 to 1976, include records from three court cases at which Ruppenthal provided legal representation.

Biography of Lloyd H. Ruppenthal

Lloyd Henry Ruppenthal was born December 15, 1901 at Russell County, Kansas to Jacob C. and Sarah Ruppenthal. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1923 and a law degree in 1925. In 1933, he opened his law practice in McPherson, Kansas, specializing in estate planning and trusts.

Ruppenthal was elected to the Kansas state senate in 1941. In 1942, he relinquished his senate seat for World War II military service, and was re-elected to the Kansas senate in 1949, serving through 1951. Ruppenthal held positions of leadership in the Republican Party and in the Alumni and Endowment Associations of the University of Kansas, from which he was awarded the University's Distinguished Service Citation and its Ellsworth Medallion. He died on February 13, 1987 at McPherson.

Scope and Contents

The Lloyd H. Ruppenthal papers consist chiefly of correspondence, clippings, committee reports, and court documents related to Ruppenthal's political campaigns and Republican Party involvement and leadership, his active duty in World War II and his military service in reserve units, his leadership of the University of Kansas Alumni Association, and his service activities in various professional bodies such as the Kansas State Bar Association and the Kansas Commission on Constitution Revision. Included also in the collection are correspondence files, notes, and court records from two U.S. District Court cases and one Kansas Supreme Court case for which Ruppenthal provided legal representation or served as chair of the hearing body.
