James Smothers became the first African American mayor of Junction City, Kansas in 1979. This collection of Smothers' papers is comprised predominately of material relating to his service on the Junction City City Commission.

Biography of James Smothers

James Smothers, a resident of Junction City, Kansas, served as a member of the Junction City City Commission from the 1977 through the mid 1980s. In 1979, Smothers became the Junction City's first African American mayor. Smothers was an active member of service organizations such as the Humane Society, the Republican Presidential Task Force, and a Noble in the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine of North and South America and its Jurisdictions, Inc.

The James Smothers papers are comprised primarily of Junction City government related materials, including several notebooks of City Commission meeting minutes, 1978-1987. Personal papers, primarily correspondence and invitations, makes up one folder of material found in the first folder of the collection.
