History of Camp Concordia

During World War II, Camp Concordia at Concordia (Cloud County), Kansas was one of many prisoner of war camps within the United States which housed captured German soldiers. The camp at Concordia was in operation from 1943 to 1945. It was the first and largest Kansas prisoner of war camp, designed to hold over 4,000 prisoners, and included a hospital, water tower, and guard tower. In 1945, a broad curriculum of camp-approved study courses, taught by German-speaking instructors, was offered by the University of Kansas to prisoners at Camp Concordia.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains detailed University of Kansas course outlines for a curriculum of courses taught in 1945 to German World War II soldiers held at Camp Concordia, a prisoner of war camp located at Concordia (Cloud County), Kansas. Each multi-page course description lists its name, subjects covered by the course, its number of hours, the name of the instructor, and bibliographies of readings, some of which are accompanied by appendices. The reading lists contain works in German, and the appendices are in German. In the heading of each course description is the name of the subject discipline within which it was offered, together with the Roman numeral assigned by the University to that discipline. Arrangement of the courses follows this numerical scheme of arrangement. Course descriptions in the collection appear only at Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, VII, IX, and X.
