This collection contains an enlarged photocopy of the original March 1, 1911 incorporation document showing the formation of The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas, plus numerous other photocopied documents pertinent to the evolution of said Association. Said collection also contains a rare litho document printed by Heinicke-Fiegel for The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas. Said item appears to be an un-issued certificate or certificate proof that would have been employed to provide capital for The Association in its early years of development.

History of The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas

Oscar Rice, who lived in Fort Scott, Kansas, was for many years a traveling salesman. In 1910 he drew up the plans and promoted the organization of The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas and on March 1, 1911 said Association became incorporated under Kansas law. The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas later evolved into and was renamed The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas, a very successful, multi-million dollar corporation well known throughout the United States of America, but now extinct. The seven incorporators and the first Board of Directors of The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas were:

W. E. Brooks (Mayor of Fort Scott, Kansas/grain business); Oscar Rice (Agent); John H. Crain (Attorney); A. B. Dickmann (Banker); Griff R. Hughes (Clothing Merchant); T. B. Coppage (Railroad Superintendent); W. C. Gunn (Real Estate and Investments)

The numerous photocopied documents contained within this collection reveal the evolutionary phases of The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas, as same evolved from The Western Automobile Indemnity Association of Fort Scott, Kansas created on March 1, 1911. One very interesting fact is that Clifton Crain Otto, one of the most creative and productive leaders of The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas was born in Bates County, Missouri on March 1, 1911. Thus, two great events occurred on the same day in the history of The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas. This collection of photocopied original documents and microfilm of same stands as a unique compilation of records reflecting the evolution of The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas.

At this time, the Creator of this collection knows of no other compilation of photocopied original records reflecting the evolution of The Western Insurance Companies of Fort Scott, Kansas. In producing and compiling said collection, every attempt was made to provide the finest photocopies, although the quality of original documents and microfilm produced from same did determine the quality of the final photocopies. As a result, the quality of some photocopies within said collection is at a minimal level of desirability, however, still sufficient to provide the reader with the important substance of the record involved.
