History of the Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy, Lawrence, Kan.
The Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy (LLPD) was organized in 1945 with a charter membership of 11 citizens in Lawrence, Kansas. The declared policy of the organization was the advancement of better interracial relations. The organization's initial efforts were directed at eliminating racial discrimination in the city's movie theaters and restaurants. Its activities expanded to include cooperation with other civil rights organizations in the desegregation of public facilities, support of political candidates who opposed racial discrimination, and lobbying in support of anti-discrimination legislation.
In 1965 the LLPD was disbanded, reportedly on the grounds that it was unnecessarily duplicating the efforts of other civil rights organizations.
