Scope and Contents
This volume of newspaper clippings, probably compiled by Nellie McGurdy, are mostly from the Lawrence, Kansas, area and date from ca. 1889-1935. Obituaries of some of the more well-known persons are: Frank Snow, former KU Chancellor; Tommy Johnson, KU coach and athlete; Solon Thacher, prominent citizen; General Wilder Metcalf, veteran of the Spanish-American and Philippine conflicts; Reverand Cordley, survivor of Quantrill's Raid and prominent Lawrence minister; Lt. Alfred C. Alford, first casualty from Kansas in the Philippine Insurrection; W.R. Stubbs, governor of Kansas; Hugh Cameron, the "Lawrence Hermit." Other items of particular interest are: Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Lawrence, President Taft's visit to Lawrence; and the "Old Windmill" fire.
