Biography of Robert Mercer Armstrong, 1841-1927
R. M. Armstrong was of Irish ancestory who immigrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1865 to Council Grove, Kansas. As one of the first settlers to the Kansas town, he was prominently involved in business, church, social, and civic affairs. In 1868 he went into the hardware business with Rev. Jacob Spencer, and in 1871 he formed a partnership with W. F. Shamleffer that lasted until 1875. In 1876 Armstrong was elected Clerk of the District Court of Morris County, a position which he held until 1889. In 1878 he went into the mercantile business with Clara Strieby which lasted until the 1903 flood when the store and contents were burned. In 1901 he was appointed Post Master serving in that position for sixteen years, and was city clerk until his death in 1927.
