Scope and Contents

The Cowherd family papers date from 1840 to 1914 and are arranged in a single series. Several documents relate to the acquisition of enslaved African Americans by the family. Other papers include tax receipts, land records, and a membership certificate. All items are fragile and should be handled with care. With the exception of a cotton ticking sewn case, which is placed at the end of the documents, folder arrangement is alphabetical.
