Biography of George Docking (1904-1964)

George Docking was born in Clay Center, Kansas on February 23, 1904, the son of William and Almeda Donley Docking. He was raised in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1925.

Docking was elected the 35th governor of Kansas in 1956, the 6th Democrat to serve in that office. Winning reelection in 1958, he was the first Democrat in Kansas elected for a second term. Running for a third term, he was not reelected (his son Robert Docking did serve three terms as governor).

In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy appointed Docking as director of the Export-Import Bank in Washington, D.C. He was still in that position when he died in Kansas City, Kansas on January 20, 1964.
