The Papers of Leonard Garrett are those of a native Kansan who began the News Hawk newspaper in Wichita, Kansas; Garrett was also a prominant historian and civil rights advocate.

Biography of Leonard Garrett
Leonard Garrett was born August 21, 1925(?) to Willie and Delia Garrett. He grew up in Kingman, Kansas and moved to Wichita, KS in the early 1940s.
In 1966, Garrett founded the News Hawk, a monthly African American newspaper that ran from the late 1960s-mid 1980s; he remained editor and publisher until just before his death.
Garrett was also founder of the Kansas Black Arts Festival in 1968 and was a founding member of the AFL-CIO Musicians Local 701. For his work and other activities, Garrett was included in the Who's Who in Black America.
Leonard Garrett died February 13, 1988.
