Biography of George Giles
George Giles was born May 9, 1909 in Junction City, Kansas. At fourteen he tried out with the Kansas City Monarchs; in 1925 he joined the team as first baseman after spending a year with another Kansas City African American baseball team the Kansas City Royals. In 1929 Giles left the Monarchs to join the Gilkerson Giants. He later moved on to join the St. Louis Stars, who won the Negro National League Champions in 1930 and 31. Giles also played with the Philadelphia Stars, the New York Black Yankees, and the Brooklyn Eagles (whom he also managed). He retired from baseball in 1939.
Giles went on to work in a Eudora, Kan. defense plant during World War II. After the war, he became a businessman in Manhattan, Kan, where he owned both a motel and a restaurant. Giles married Helen Miller; the couple had four children. George Giles died in March 1992.
