Hannah O. Leibengood papers
Overview
These papers of lifelong Lawrence, Kansas resident Hannah O. Leibengood (1904-1993) include letters from her family and friends, as well as photographs and memorabilia. Also included are several journals of her grandfather, dentist Henry W. Howe (1842-1909), and many business records of her father, Loyd R. Howe (1869-1962), who operated a wallpapering, painting, and sign-making business in Lawrence for more than forty years.

Biography of Hannah O. Leibengood
Hannah Olive Leibengood was born October 21, 1904 at Lawrence, Kansas to Loyd Reynolds Howe (1869-1962) and Sadie Augusta (Lescher) Howe. Hannah's father was a boy when he emigrated to Lawrence from Ohio in 1876 with his parents, dentist Henry Warren Howe (1842-1909) and Olive (Reynolds) Howe. Loyd Howe operated a wallpaper, paint, and sign-making business in Lawrence for more than forty years.
Hannah attended public schools in Lawrence, and on September 3, 1932 married Donald Leibengood at Lawrence. Their son Donald Arthur Leibengood was born on November 21, 1938. Hannah's father died on October 16, 1962, and her husband Donald died on May 23, 1975. Hannah died on July 10, 1993. Services were in Lawrence and burial was in the Hiawatha Cemetery at Hiawatha, Kansas.

In the Hannah O. Leibengood Papers are letters from Mrs. Leibengood's friends and family, including letters written from Germany by her husband Donald. Among her letters from friends, the largest quantity of letters and postcards is from librarian and fellow East Lawrence resident Shelley Miller. In the collection are many legal and business records of Hannah's father, Loyd R. Howe, including twenty of his pocket diaries which contain his notes of work performed from about 1912 to 1955 in his Lawrence wallpapering, painting, and sign-making business. The collection's photographs, chiefly from the 1980s and 1990s, are at RH MS-P 902. Oversized items are at RH MS Q227 and RH MS R193. Among these items are sample signs and lettering produced by Loyd Howe for a correspondence course which he took in sign-making.
