Scope and Contents
This ledger consists chiefly of inventories and records of cash receipts from 1868 to 1883 for general store merchandise. Inventories for October 1868 through March 1870 bear the heading "Olivet" (a community in Osage County, Kansas).
Other entries include undated lists of apparently auctioned household goods, salary lists recorded by Congregational minister William P. Esler for years ending March 1 of 1873 and 1874, miscellaneous notes of accounts dated 1882 to 1883, and segments of a handwritten play ("Naval Engagements") by Jennie Harding. The inscription "J. Mather Jones, Arvonia, Kansas" on a front flyleaf of the ledger is that of the founder of the Welsh community of Arvonia (Osage County), Kansas, which was settled in 1869.
At RH MS P623 are a number of items found laid in and separated from the ledger.
