Records of the Pierian Club
Overview
The Pierian Club was organized in 1894 by Mrs. D.F. Rivers of Kansas City, Kansas and was one of the first African American literary clubs in the area. This collection of Pierian Club records contains club histories, financial and miscellaneous records, meeting minutes, yearbooks, photographs, a 50th anniversary scrapbook from 1944, and a videotape of the club's centennial celebration in 1994.

History of Pierian Club
The Pierian Club was organized in 1894 by Mrs. D.F. Rivers of Kansas City, Kansas. Named for the “Pierian spring” of Thomas Pope’s Essay on Criticism, the organization was one of the first African American literary clubs in the area. A club for women only, bimonthly meetings featured lectures, discussions of current events, and correspondence coursework. Members also engaged in community service and participated in social events. The club remains active into the 21st century.

This collection of Pierian Club records contains club histories, financial and miscellaneous records, meeting minutes, yearbooks, photographs, a 50th anniversary scrapbook from 1944, and a videotape of the club's centennial celebration in 1994.
Oversize materials, the video cassette, and photographs have been physically separated from the rest of the collection and are described at the end of this finding aid, organized by call number. All photographs in the Pierian Club collection have corresponding copy negatives.
