Overview

Albert T. Reid, born in Concordia, Kansas, is best known for his work in editorial cartoons in the early 20th century. He also worked as a painter and a teacher of art throughout his life. This collection primarily contains correspondence of his and reproductions of his cartoons and other art, along with various other materials relating to him.

Biography of Albert T. Reid

Albert T. Reid was born on August 12, 1873 at Concordia (Cloud County), Kansas. Reid studied at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, as well as the Art Students League and the New York School of Art.

Reid's early professional experiences as an artist and illustrator include service at the Kansas City Star, 1897-1899; the Chicago Record, 1899; the New York Herald, 1899-1900; and magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, from 1901-1902. He founded and published the Leavenworth Post from 1905-1923, and published the Kansas Farmer from 1908-1916. With George Melville Stone, Reid directed the Reid-Stone Art School in Topeka.

Reid established the Albert R. Reid Syndicate for political cartoons and served as the National President of the American Artists Professional League. He died in New York, where he had lived for several decades, on November 26, 1955.

Scope and Contents

The Albert Reid papers consists of correspondence, cartoons and illustrations, personal papers, and material relating to professional organizations and colleagues. The papers are arranged in four series reflecting those document types. Correspondence is arranged in a general chronological series, then by names of major correspondents. Cartoons and Illustrations series consists of undated prints from original Reid drawings, which are described by genre, or if identified, by subject. Publications included in this series feature Reid's work. Personal papers consists of manuscripts and personal records; the Professional organizations, colleagues, and misc. series consists of material by or about Reid's colleagues, friends, and professional groups, including the American Artists Professional League and the Cartoonist Club.
