This collection is that of Esther Suhr, a native of Logan, Kansas, whose column on local history was featured for many years in Logan community newspapers. Included are clippings of her columns from the 1960s to the 1970s, as well as many other articles and histories regarding the Logan community, Phillips County, Kansas, and pioneer families of the area.

Biography of Esther L. Suhr

Esther L. Suhr was born February 8, 1911 at Logan (Phillips County), Kansas to Frederick C. and Esther L. (Lillian) Albright. On September 26, 1937, she married Sumner T. Suhr, a Logan, Kansas farmer and rancher. Mrs. Suhr was a local historian of Logan, Kansas. Her newspaper column on Logan history, titled "Yester Year," was published for many years in The Logan Republican. She died on October 21, 1993 at Logan.

Scope and Contents

The Esther Suhr Collection contains clippings of her local history "Yester Year" columns from The Logan Republican, as well as many other local newspaper articles and editions concerning Logan, Kansas history. Included also are typescripts regarding the history of the Logan community and its citizens, including histories and obituaries of Logan, Kansas pioneers, area maps, published articles regarding local history, and photocopies of several historical documents, including an 1879 homestead certificate issued to Esther Suhr's father for Phillips County land.

Original photographs of Logan, Kansas sites and citizens appear in an Esther Suhr typescript in folder 4 of Box 1. Several photographs of her Albright family members are at RH MS-P 883. Envelopes of oversize newspaper clippings and newspaper editions are at RH MS R186.
