Overview
Robert L. Gilbert immigrated to the United States from England in 1855 and arrived in Lawrence, Kansas later that year. This collection contains diaries, personal books, letters and official documents, and an autobiography, and photographs.

Biography of Robert L. Gilbert
Gilbert was born and grew up in Sibton, Suffolk County, England. He studied at Yoxford Academy, then became a gardner in the Crystal Palace Gardens in London.
In his diary he recorded books he read about emigrating to the U.S., on Sept 6, 1855 he shipped to New York on the Maid of Orleans. By November 11 of that year he had reached Lawrence, Kanas. The diaries also include a correspondence list of letters sent and received during his travel, money spent, and a later day by day account of farming and raising sheep near Lawrence.
